Deborah Miles-Johnson

Deborah Miles-Johnson is a mezzo-soprano, conductor and vocal coach.

As a singer, she was a staff member of the BBC Singers for many years and has sung, recorded and broadcast with many other high-profile ensembles including The Sixteen and the Tallis Scholars. As a busy soloist she has worked with many of the world’s leading conductors including Sir Simon Rattle in Stravinsky’s Requiem Canticles, Trevor Pinnock on a worldwide tour of Bach’s St Matthew Passion. and Sir Antonio Pappano in Puccini’s Suor Angelica for EMI which is one of many commercial recordings. She has made regular appearances at the Proms and is also a member of the Extra Chorus, Royal Opera House.

Active in the contemporary repertoire, Deborah is known for tackling difficult contemporary works at short notice performing Henze’s ‘Elegy for young Lovers’ and the premiere of Brian Elias’s Laments at a week’s notice. As a versatile singer, she also features on many of the backing tracks of major films including all the Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Harry Potter films plus Pirates of the Caribbean and How to train your dragon 2!

She was vocal coach to the BBC Symphony Chorus for many years and has given vocal assistance to many other top London choirs. She visits choirs throughout the UK and also abroad, visiting the Hong Kong Bach Choir and St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney for a series of workshops. She has a thriving private teaching practice and gives vocal and choral masterclasses at a variety of summer schools and singing days, including the ABCD convention in 2017.

As a conductor, Deborah is the conductor of her newly formed ensemble of women ‘Gloriana’ and the prize winning ‘Imperial Male Voice Choir’ who are both based in London.
